SAFE WORKING LOAD SIGN GUIDE

Understanding Your Safe Working Load Sign

Understanding Your Safe Working Load Sign

Your pallet racking Safe Working Load (SWL) sign provides important information about the approved configuration of the racking and the loads it is designed to carry. Understanding this information helps your team use the racking correctly and recognise when changes require further assessment.

01 — Unit Load / Pallet Load

The maximum permitted individual unit load or pallet load, including the weight of the pallet.

02 — Beam Level Load

The maximum total load permitted on the nominated beam level.

03 — Bay Load

The maximum permitted load for the complete racking bay, subject to the approved configuration shown.

04 — Approved Rack Configuration

Shows the configuration for which the Safe Working Loads apply. Moving beams, adding levels or otherwise altering the configuration can affect the load capacity of the racking.

05 — Maximum First Beam Level Height

Shows the maximum permitted distance from the baseplate/floor reference to the first beam level.

06 — Maximum Beam Level Spacing

Shows the maximum permitted spacing between the nominated beam levels.

07 — Rack & Design Information

The SWL sign can identify relevant information including the manufacturer, supplier, structural designer, installation date and customer.

08 — Load Arrangement

Loads must be placed and distributed in accordance with the approved configuration and loading conditions shown on the SWL sign.

CHANGED YOUR RACKING?

Moving a beam, adding a beam level, changing pallet weights, changing the type or size of loads, or otherwise modifying the racking can affect its load-carrying capacity. Do not alter the racking configuration without appropriate assessment by the racking designer or a competent person. Safe Working Load information and signage may need to be updated following modifications.

INSPECTION REMINDER

Informal inspections should be carried out at a frequency determined by risk assessment or as recommended by a competent person. Formal pallet racking inspections must be conducted by a competent person at intervals not exceeding 12 months. Damage, however minor, should be reported and documented immediately so its effect on safety can be assessed.

Not sure whether your racking configuration or Safe Working Load signage is correct?

Queensland Rack Inspections can inspect your pallet racking, review the current configuration and identify any issues requiring further assessment or corrective action.
